Girls and boys cross country look forward to championship meet

The Old Rochester Regional High School girls cross country team hope to extend their undefeated season with a win at next week's championship meet.

The boys and girls varsity teams will compete in the conference championship against many South Coast Schools on Monday, Oct. 28. The race begins at 3 p.m. and will be held in Washburn Park in Marion.

The girls earned a third straight South Coast Conference title after defeating two schools on Oct. 15.

At a tri-meet, the Bulldogs beat Dighton-Rehoboth and Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School.

ORR runners swept the competition and took the first four places. Sam Barrett won the race and ran 21:59. Coming in a close second was Emily Josephson, a sophomore, who had a time of 22:04. Paige Santos ran the meet in 22:51 and placed third.

Coach Cindy Tilden noted Santos is back on the team and running well after an injury sidelined her last year. Rachel Scheub placed fourth and ran the course in 22:46.

With 62 runners on the boys and girls cross country teams Tilden said there’s no shortage of talent and more students are joining each year.

“We are lucky in that fifteen freshman tried out for the team this year,” Tilden said. “For a very large team the kids tend to be close. The older ones watch our for the younger runners.”

On the boys team, Mike Wyman has set course records at Apponequet Regional High School where he had a time of 16:01, which beat the previous record by about two minutes. On Oct. 15, Wyman toppled the Dighton-Rehoboth course record with a time of 16:18.

Though not perfect, the boys team’s record stands at 4-2, having lost to Dighton-Rehoboth and Seekonk earlier in the year.
