MATTAPOISETT - A gunman and two suspects were apprehended by local police forces around 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 1 after suspects fled the scene in Mattapoisett, drove to New Bedford, and were stopped during a car chase on I-195 in Fairhaven.

A call came in at 6:37 p.m. on the dispatch traffic for a gun, described as a "mini AK-47,” pointed at the back of an individual at 155 North Street.

A black Nissan Altima left the scene with three male occupants in the car. The registration came back to an East Wareham address.

New Bedford police spotted the vehicle at about 7:15 p.m. near MacArthur Boulevard and observed it heading eastbound on I-195 towards Fairhaven.

A brief chase ensued down the highway while Mattapoisett and Rochester police put spikes down in the road to blow the tires out if the car sped by.

New Bedford, Fairhaven and Mattapoisett officers surrounded the vehicle before the Main Street overpass in Fairhaven.

The three suspects were placed into custody by New Bedford police officers and sent back to Mattapoisett Police Headquarters along with the Nissan by 7:45 p.m.

The incident is under investigation with the Mattapoisett Police Department.

Massachusetts State Police assisted on the call.
