Harbor Days to add cornhole tournament
The Lions Club's annual Harbor Days is a long-standing tradition in town with the Friday night fish fry, weekend arts and crafts fair and U Pick 'Em auction at Shipyard Park.
But this year the Lions are looking to add some friendly competition with the first Harbor Days Cornhole Tournament on Saturday.
"One of the reasons we do this is to give people new reasons to come to the park during Harbor Days," said Don Bamberger. "We're trying to make some activities that have more of a universal appeal.
Cornhole features two rectangular boards spaced about 27 feet apart that each have one hole at the far end. The object of the game is to throw bean bags into the hole, for three points each, or at least to land them somewhere on the board, for one point each.
The cost to participate is $30 per team, and as a double elimination tournament, every team will get to play at least two games. The winning pair will receive a set of custom cornhole boards made by Bamberger and fellow Lions Club member Bruce Rocha Sr.
Bamberger said Gotta Have It! in Fairhaven agreed to donate the materials for the boards, which have a $300 value, and he hopes to have 20 to 30 teams sign up.
The second and third place teams will receive a gift card.
There will also be a "last man standing" tournament where, for a $10 entry fee, individuals will compete against each other until there is a winner, who will receive a cash prize.
The tournaments will be held in the parking area behind the park and begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 16. Ages 16 and older are invited to join. For any questions or to sign up, email MattLionsClub@gmail.com.
