MARION — A talk about turtles will be held in Marion, hosted by Sippican Lands Trust and the Marion Natural History Museum.
Marine biologist Carol “Krill” Carson, founder and president of New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance, and Sippican Lands Trust board member Deb Ewing will speak Thursday, Aug. 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Marion Natural History Museum.
They will cover local diamondback terrapins. Carson oversees the Southcoast Terrapin Project, a project “which aims to both study and protect diamondback terrapins and their hatchlings,” according to Sippican Lands Trust.
Ewing is a “trained volunteer” with the project and has “experience helping diamondback terrapins in her own neighborhood,” Sippican Lands Trust said.
The diamondback terrapin is a threatened species in Massachusetts, and the only brackish water that lives in New England coastal marshes, according to the New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance.
The medium-sized turtle species was previously abundant in the area’s coastal marshes and waterways but now faces threats to survival. Those threats include the loss of salt marsh habitat and suitable nesting sites due to rising sea levels, coastal flooding and erosion, according to the New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance.
Entry at the event is $10 or free for Sippican Lands Trust and Marion Natural History Museum. Register at sippicanlandstrust.org.
