High interest for Marion's facilities manager position

Sep 5, 2013

The search for a new facilities manager in Marion has netted more than 30 applicants.

To whittle the field down, Town Administrator Paul Dawson recommended a subcommittee be formed to review applications. Subcommittee members include Dawson, Selectmen Chair Jody Dickerson, and Old Rochester Regional Facilities Manager Eugene Jones.

Dawson said the process would begin immediately.

“We have a number of qualified finalists,” he said.

The new position was created with voter approval at Town Meeting last spring. There are 40 buildings in town that require maintenance. A facilities manager would oversee that upkeep. Currently, Department of Public Works employees are performing that work.

At Town Meeting, Dawson said he hoped to find someone who will be able to make repairs, but also be qualified enough to oversee renovations at the Town House in the role of owner’s project manager. In Massachusetts, owner’s project managers are required for renovations on municipal property that cost more than $1.5 million. Managers provide advice and consultation with respect to design and engineering, among other duties, for the construction.

“It’s a position that’s been long overdue,” Dawson said at Town Meeting.

Selectmen approved advertisement language in July. A salary has not yet been set.
