It's all about the sash at Mr. ORR pageant
The nine contestants of the Mr. ORR pageant proved themselves to be quick-witted Renaissance men at Thursday night’s annual event.
Following a dance number by all of the pageant hopefuls, host Michael Kassabian told the audience gathered at the Old Rochester Regional High School auditorium: “They will make us laugh, smile and feel really uncomfortable at the same time.”
Before the casual wear event, students shared their reasons for competing.
For Ben Rounseville the answer was threefold: “The fame, the riches, the ladies.”
For another contestant it was all about the fashion, “I’ve always wanted a sash.”
But the students had to do more than wishful thinking to win over judges Kathleen Brunelle, Micah Kidney and Michael Beson.
The guys donned unconventional casual wear for the first event while Kassabian educated the audience on some of their more interesting characteristics.
For example, Mitch Midwood “teaches German shepherds how to bark in Spanish” and Ian MacLellan “enjoys twenty-mile walks on the beach.”
The talent portion of the contest followed, and the students certainly took the “points for creativity” aspect of the contest seriously.
Rather than doing a “generic talent” Midwood kneeled in a kiddie pool while friends coated him in canned peaches, eggs, mustard and other food.
MacLellan, a member of ORR’s Drama Club, did a dramatic reading of an Amazon review while Alexi Aruri and Mike Pellegrino reenacted scenes from “Titanic.”
The students were then on to the formal wear challenge, with tuxedos provided by Main Street Formals, followed by the Q&A portion of the event. Each was asked two questions.
Kassabian asked Pellegrino about his role model. He answered God and his mother.
“Not just because she birthed me and all that trouble, but because she put up with me,” he said.
John Kvilhaug was asked about the best advice he ever received. Answer? “Behave yourself.”
Ben Rounseville’s question was who would star in a biopic about his life. The obvious answer? Oprah.
“It would be the role of a lifetime for her,” said Rounseville.
After hearing the answers, the judges had all they needed to make a decision.
Midwood, no longer covered in mustard and whipped cream, took home second runner up while Pellegrino, AKA Jack in “Titanic” received the honor of first runner up.
But Aruri, who had stepped (or rolled) onto the stage in a blowup ball for the formal wear challenge was the top winner of the night, receiving the coveted Mr. ORR 2015 sash and a gold crown.
Advisers Sarabeth Morell and Heather Kidney organized the event.
