John Cunha, 91, Navy veteran, retired police officer

John Cunha, 91, of Wareham, formerly of Cambridge, died September 28 at Sippican Healthcare Center in Marion. He was the husband of the late Rosaline J. (Browne) Cunha.

Born in Cambridge, he was the son of the late Mary (Alves) and John Cunha, Sr.

Mr. Cunha was a police officer for the City of Somerville for many years. He retired from the department as detective sergeant. He also served as a court officer for Middlesex Superior Court.

Mr. Cunha was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He served in the Navy as a musician and enjoyed jazz music. Mr. Cunha played flute, clarinet, and saxophone and was the band leader of the John Cunha Orchestra. He was a member of the James A. Logan V.F.W. Post # 6800 in Somerville.

Survivors include his children, John “Jack” Cunha of Burlington, Ann Marie Booth of Osterville, and Maureen C. Bessey of Rochester. His grandchildren, Charlene Repetto, Christine Moore, Richard Cunha, Robert Cunha, Shelagh Malandrinos, Kyle Wolfe, Christopher Booth, Kayla Bessey and Patrick Bessey. Also survived by 9 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was the brother of the late Lillian Federico and Dorothy Oliveira.

Funeral will be from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway, Wareham on Wednesday., Oct. 2, at 9 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony’s Church, Gault Rd., West Wareham at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge. Visiting hours will be Tues. from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
