Kids, dogs break out Halloween costumes early for Pumpkin Palooza

MARION — Kids were not the only ones sporting Halloween costumes at Marion’s third annual Pumpkin Palooza on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Dogs of the community also had their chance to show off new looks as the event featured a “parade” where canines wearing costumes walked around the lawn of the Benjamin Cushing Community Center and took home some treats and toys.

Human children at the event spent their time carving pumpkins, getting their face painted and playing limbo.

The event is hosted by the Marion Council on Aging and sponsored by the Friends of Marion Council on Aging and Friends of Marion Recreation Department.

Council on Aging events coordinator Linda Jackvony said her favorite part of the annual event is seeing grandparents and grandchildren spending time together.

“These are folks that come into our building on a daily basis,” said Jackvony of certain attendees. “Then when you see them with their grandchildren, it’s just awesome.”

Pumpkins carved by families at the Pumpkin Palooza will be displayed along Route 6 and lit up at night.

Other attractions at the palooza included a petting zoo which featured alpacas and goats desperate for attention and food. The community happily obliged to give them both.

A cotton candy machine kicked off what should be a long week of eating sugar for kids in the community.

Jackvony said planning for the event starts in the spring as she starts reaching out to vendors. Dunkin Donuts and Oxford Creamery’s Oxcart fed many throughout the day.

The Massachusetts Cultural Council provided a grant of $2,500 for the event.

“This is a nice community event,” said Jackvony. “We got good weather today and it’s going great.”
