Land trust honors former member with trail
The Rochester Land Trust honored its former treasurer and board member, Herb Wood, with a dedication at one of its newest trails on Sunday afternoon.
Wood, who passed away last December, served on the trust for eight years and lived in Rochester for most of his life.
The trail that now bears his name is a short, circular hike on Mary's Pond Road near Leonard's Pond. Constructed in 2009 by Michael Spearin for his Eagle Scout project, the trail is the only one the trust has formally named.
At the dedication, trust member Russ Keeler spoke about Herb. "Trust was a word that really embodies what Herb was all about," said Keeler. "Herb understood that we're all about community...we're entrusted to preserve and protect the land for everybody in town."
Wood's wife Sandra also spoke.
"Working to keep Rochester as rural as possible was important to Herb," she said. "What a perfect spot this is. Herb would absolutely love it.
In addition to members of the land trust, Herb and Sandra Wood's family attended the ceremony and helped unveil a sign at the entrance to the trail.
