Let them eat cake: Artisan Bake Shop wins best wedding cake award two years running
Getting your bakery in one of the most popular wedding magazines in the country is just the icing on top of the cake for Meredith Rousseau.
Rousseau, the owner of Rochester’s Artisan Bake Shop, has come to be known as a go-to place for finely, and sometimes fancifully, decorated cakes.
A Rochester native, Rousseau graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in New York in 2004 and started the bakery in her hometown in 2006.
While Rousseau said she advertised in publications such as the popular wedding magazine “The Knot,” most of her customers came from word of mouth.
Ultimately, it was votes from those customers’ that got the shop in the “Best of the Knot Boston” for the second year running as one of the best wedding cake and dessert bakeries in the area.
“It’s a big honor for us,” said Rousseau, who stresses attention to detail.
“There are a lot of bigger bakeries, but we pride ourselves on giving our brides personal service. We know their names, we know their voice, we know who they are.”
Rousseau said she got a boost in business after winning last year. The shop made cakes for 160 weddings plus a myriad of other cakes for special events.
And what makes an outstanding wedding cake? Rousseau said these days “anything goes.”
“I had a bride who wanted a pumpkin cake in July. You can do anything,” she said.
In her consultations with brides, Rousseau said, “I like doing the crazy stuff and funky things, but nothing screams wedding more than a traditional white wedding cake. That really gets you.”
“Best of the Knot Boston” will be on stands in the spring.
The Artisan Bakeshop is located at 265 Walnut Plain Road in Rochester.
