Letter to the Editor: Promote recycling nips

May 28, 2019

To the Editor:

I totally agree with Eileen Marum’s opinion letter on nips. My wife and I walk daily and nip bottles are everywhere. It is obvious that nips are largely consumed while driving. Most anyone who drinks at home, like myself, buys more economical sizes.

But appealing to the nippers won’t work. Surely they know what they are doing and simply don’t care. I favor an outright ban, but since that probably won’t fly, how about a state-wide 25 cent deposit? This will certainly dampen demand, and reward those good souls who pick these bottles up.

Unlike the failed bottle bill expansion, this not only promotes recycling, but, more importantly, makes our roads cleaner and safer. Also, the bottle bill affects nearly everyone, whereas a “nip bill” only affects a small, double law breaking minority of the population. What’s not to like about it?
