Letter to the editor: Response to youth engagement
Dear Editor,
A huge thank you goes to Nicki Demakis for highlighting the importance of Town Meeting and municipal elections not only in Mattapoisett, but in all local governmental elections.
Local government is where decisions most directly affect our daily lives, our schools, housing options, public safety, infrastructure and how we prepare for a changing climate and economy.
Indeed, these local processes often receive the least attention, even though individual voices carry the greatest weight.
When participation is low, the risk isn’t just apathy; it’s that important decisions are made without the full range of perspectives our community has to offer.
The concern that partisan attacks may discourage capable younger residents from stepping forward is real and troubling.
Municipal government works best when it remains focused on problem-solving, collaboration, and the shared well-being of the town, and not national political divides.
Mattapoisett’s expanded Select Board presents a real opportunity to bring in new voices, fresh ideas, and thoughtful scrutiny of long-standing practices.
That kind of engagement strengthens trust and makes local democracy more resilient.
Whether through voting, attending Town Meeting, or running for office, participation matters.
The future of Mattapoisett, and all communities for that matter, will be shaped by those who show up.
Encouraging younger residents to take part, starting with pulling papers and considering a run, helps ensure that the town reflects the needs and values of all generations.
Local democracy only works when people believe their voices matter, and when they use them.
