MATTAPOISETT —  The United States Coast Guard Flotilla 63 (the caretakers of the lighthouse) and the Mattapoisett Police Department are looking for details about vandalism spotted at Ned’s Point Lighthouse.

Sometime in between Tuesday, Sept. 29 and Thursday, Oct. 1 at nighttime, the lock holding closed the doors of the Ned’s Point Lighthouse was broken. 

Flotilla member Sal Giglia said he went to the lighthouse on Friday for his usual inspection of the beacon on its interior and exterior and saw that the broken lock. 

He said that vandalizing or destroying a National Historic landmark carries a sentence of up to 10 years.

“The lock is not repairable,” Giglia said. “This nonsense has to come to an end.”

Giglia asked if anyone sees or hears anything about this to notify the Police Department.
