Lions’ shortcake still a hit, even without tunes

Jul 17, 2019

MATTAPOISETT — The Mattapoisett Lions’ strawberry shortcake and concert event was a bit quieter than usual, after the rain made them cancel the music portion of the July 17 event. But the food was still a draw.

The event is part of the leadup to the Lions’ Harbor Days events on Saturday and Sunday.

The Lions started off the night with 500 biscuits, four big coolers of strawberries, and three large cases (36 bottles) of whipped cream.

Bruce Rocha was in charge of putting whipped cream on the shortcake. He seemed to find a reason why every person should get a little extra.

“People who are carrying soccer balls get a little extra,” he said to one little boy with a soccer ball.

“People with hearts on their shirt get a little extra,” he said, to a girl.

By the end of the night only about 20 biscuits remained.

The strawberry shortcake event has been a staple of Harbor Days since the event first started as a strawberry festival. Organizers will replenish the supply and continue to serve shortcake throughout the weekend.

Lions Club Membership Director Bruce Rocha said that the Lions club is accepting members, for anyone who attends the week’s events and is interested in getting involved. Interested members can email lionsmembership1@gmail.com

“It will make you feel good,” Rocha said. He also said that whenever he travels “I talk to Lions in other countries. It makes me feel like I am already accepted.”

The event wrapped up a little early at around 8 p.m. because of the rain.
