Look out for threatened turtles

Jun 21, 2019

The New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance (NEWCA) has asked residents of Marion and Mattapoisett to be on the lookout for Diamondback Terrapin Turtles during their nesting season of June and July.

The threatened species of marsh turtle is particularly vulnerable this time of year, as female terrapins emerge from the water to use beaches, lawns, and even gravel driveways to lay eggs.

Representatives from NEWCA have asked that if anyone sees a turtle crossing a street, to move the turtle across the street in the direction it was walking, if it is safe to do so.

NEWCA also works to track terrapin sightings. Marion and Mattapoisett residents can call the terrapin sighting hotline at (508) 566-0009, or visit www.necwa.org.

The terrapins in the area are easily identified by their tan shells with a design that looks like the inside of a tree trunk, pale skin speckled with black lines and dots and shiny heads.
