Lowe's employees spruce up Rochester Senior Center
The Rochester Senior Center boasts a new commercial grill, shed and landscaping – all donated – courtesy of the Lowe’s Heroes program.
On Oct. 8, employees from the Wareham Lowe’s arrived with the materials and manpower to install the shed and plant the flowers.
Rochester Council on Aging employee Karen Cole suggested the Senior Center as a candidate for the program. Cole’s son, Bill, manages the outdoor department at Lowe’s and brought the idea to store management.
Senior Center Director Sharon Lally then submitted a wish list of items and projects that would benefit the center.
“With budgets so tight these days any little bit of help is appreciated,” Lally said.
On a sunny day earlier this month, volunteers converged upon the Senior Center to begin their work. Store Manager Chris Mullins led the group, swinging a pickax to clear the ground for a mum plant.
Facilities Manager Andrew Daniel and Town Administrator Mike McCue greeted the volunteers and thanked them for the donations.
Aside from Mullins and Cole, the Lowe’s crew included Human Resource Director Jessica Sylvia, Garden Specialist Herb Holbrook and staff members Ashley Walters, Melissa Pulsifer, Preston Badger and Jim Lindsay.
The Lowe’s Heroes volunteer program was started more than 10 years ago. It encourages employees to adopt a volunteer project, either for a local nonprofit or public school, and make a difference.
To date, Lowe’s Heroes participated in more than 1,300 projects, and Lowe’s contributed more than $1.3 million in materials. Lowe’s Heroes include volunteers from its stores, distribution centers and customer support centers.
