Man charged with stealing $100,000 from elderly Mattapoisett woman
Jason Bobola was arraigned in Brockton Superior Court on May 28 for allegedly stealing more than $100,000 from a 70-year-old woman.
According to police and prosecutors, Bobola, a 31-year-old Mattapoisett resident, struck up a friendship with the victim and said he loved her as family.
Bobola has been charged on 11 counts of larceny exceeding $250 for a person 60 or older.
Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz said the theft occurred from July 2013 until January 2014.
The victim, who is not being identified, lived alone on a fixed income after her retirement. Bobola called the woman “gram” and often told her he loved her more than his own family.
Officials said Bobola met the victim at his former business, Jay’s Automotive Repair in Mattapoisett, where he repaired her car.
According to Cruz, Bobola is charged with having taken the money without the victim’s permission by using her credit cards for cash advances. In other instances, Bobola received loans from the victim that he promised to pay back.
A Superior Court judge issued a warrant for Bobola’s arrest following a Plymouth County Grand Jury indictment. Mattapoisett police arrested Bobola on Wednesday, May 27. Bail was set at $30,000. He is currently on probation out of the Wareham District Court on other matters.
Bobola is scheduled to appear in court June 29 for a pre-trial conference. The case is being prosecuted by Plymouth County Assistant District Attorney Jessica Healy and was investigated by Mattapoisett police.
