March madness: Alumni beat ORR boys basketball team 80-78
There was no rust on the alumni of the Old Rochester Regional High School boys' basketball team as they beat the current team, 80-78, on March 16.
The alumni vs. student game wass part of a fundraising effort for the Old Rochester Regional High School's Athletic Hall of Fame.
At one point in the third quarter, the alumni team had a 10-point lead, but the students closed the gap and the game stayed close, coming down to a nail-biting final few seconds.
The alumni were up 80-77 in those moments, when the current students were awarded foul shots with six seconds left. The students were able to move one point closer to the alumni—but with 1.5 seconds left, the alumni were awarded a foul shot of their own.
The alumni didn't make the shot, but took the game anyway, 80-78.
"It was great," John Guilherme, class of 1969, said. "We did beat them once before."
Guilherme was the oldest alum playing in the game, his fourth time doing so.
"I'm just the old guy they send out for a few shots off," he laughed. "It's a lot of fun."
Eric Clark, class of 1995, played in the alumni game for the first time, and said it wasn't as intense as he was expecting.
"It was actually less competitive than I expected," he explained. "It was a lot of fun."
There was also a current team versus alumni game for the girls too. To see how they fared, click here.
