Marion board supports alcohol at Music Hall concerts
Selectmen have voiced support for an idea that would allow for beer and wine to be served at concerts in the Music Hall.
Mattapoisett resident Mitchell Suzan appeared at a November meeting of the board. He and business partner Steve Johnson of Rochester had sought approval to allow guests to bring their own beer and wine for concerts the two would host in the hall.
Selectmen were skeptical of the idea at the time. On Tuesday night, Suzan and Johnson said they would instead seek one-day alcohol licenses from the board on an as-needed basis. The change was required to meet insurance requirements.
Selectmen favored the idea, which is identical to how the board approves licenses for any special event that serves alcohol in town.
Instead of "bring your own beer" (or wine) concert attendees would purchase tickets. The ticket would allow the buyer to be served no more than two alcoholic beverages. Additionally, those handing out the alcoholic beverages would need to undergo special training.
“Each event would have to come before the board for approval,” Town Administrator Paul Dawson said.
Because of that procedure, a formal motion was not required by Selectmen. Board members said they were "comfortable" with approving Suzan and Johnson's concerts as they are scheduled.
