MARION — The First Congregational Church of Marion has announced the 50th anniversary of Penny Pinchers’ Exchange.

For half a century, Penny Pinchers’ Exchange “has been a place to discover unique treasures, along with being a hub of community spirit, support and generosity,” a news release said.

The church-based thrift store was founded in 1974 as a way to serve local community needs, according to the release.

“Over the years, it has grown from a modest endeavor into a cherished institution, where purchases and donations have contributed to the well-being of our neighbors,” the release said.

An anniversary celebration will be held Saturday, Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Penny Pinchers’ Exchange, 39 Main St.

The 50-year reflection will honor the efforts of volunteers and the support of patrons, as well as “the many lives touched by the goodwill generated within our walls,” according to the release.

“Penny Pinchers’ Exchange has become much more than just a place to shop – it is a testament to the enduring spirit of compassion and community that defines our village,” the release said.

Cake and lemonade will be served at the anniversary celebration, and special sales will also be offered through September at the store during regular hours — Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
