Marion Council on Aging July events calendar

MARION — In addition to regular scheduled programming, the Marion Council on Aging will be holding several special events in July and August.

On Friday July 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. the Artisans of Dexter Beach, an eclectic group of amateur and professional artists, will present their work at the community center.

Six weeks of weekly literature seminars on Edna St. Vincent Millay will be held on Mondays at 11 a.m. from July 12 to August 16. The biography “What my Lips Have Kissed” by Mark Epstein is recommended reading for the event. Registration is required.

On Tuesday, July 13 at 1 p.m., magician Jack Ryan will put on a magic show at the council on aging featuring sophisticated tricks and humor.

On Friday, July 16 at 10:15 a.m., Dr. Edward Hoffer will visit the council on aging to answer medical questions that attendees may have forgotten or decided not to ask their doctors. Questions can be left anonymously in the box at the entrance and the doctor will attempt to answer as many as possible. However, these answers are not intended to replace the advice of each patient’s personal physician, as Dr. Hoffer will not have access to their specific medical records.

On Monday, July 19 at 1 p.m., the council on aging will hold a “jar opener demonstration” during which attendees will be able to test various jar openers and get information about how to purchase one if they find one they like.

On Thursday, July 22 at 11:30 a.m., Marion Police and Fire/EMS Departments will cook up a summer barbecue for the council on aging. Limited seating is available and reservations are required. Registrants can sign up starting July 8. A suggested donation of $5 is requested.

On Monday, July 26 at 1 p.m., the council will hold a bingo game. Cost to play is $5.00
for a standard pack of play, $1.00 coverall and $1.00 50/50 game.

On Thursday, July 29 at 1 p.m., a representative from the Plymouth County Mosquito Control Project will give an educational presentation on mosquitoes and how to protect yourself from them.

On Tuesday, August 24 at 9:30 a.m., the COA has organized a tour of the Wang Theater in Boston including access to the stage, back-stage, and hall of fame exhibit. Tour-goers will then have lunch at the Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery. The cost of the trip is $16 for transportation and the tour, lunch will be additional. Signups begin on July 6.

The COA will also host four weeks of Tai Chi classes from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursdays starting July 8. Tai Chi is a traditional Chinese martial art characterized by slow, fluid movements and an emphasis on posture and deep breathing. The cost of the series is $20 and registration is required.
