Marion developer withdraws application for 28-unit project

Nov 2, 2021

MARION – Developer Sherman E. Briggs is no longer looking to build a development with 28 townhouses between Mill Street, Spring Street and Route 6.

Briggs sent a letter to the Planning Board on Oct. 20, requesting that he be allowed to withdraw his application without prejudice. Board members unanimously approved his request to withdraw the application on Nov. 1.

Briggs was not present at the meeting.

The developer has proposed various plans for the space on Mill Street and Spring Street over the last ten years or so. His first plan included a mixed commercial and residential development, along with affordable housing units.

Briggs included a gazebo, small gardening area and community association in his most recent plans. He had also planned to pay the town $150,000 toward affordable housing instead of including the affordable units, as originally proposed.

The development has also led to several rezoning requests at Town Meeting, the most recent in 2018, to rezone the land it is on as Residential Type E, which allows for condominiums.
