Marion employee cell phone policy to be drafted

Marion officials want employees to hang up their cell phones while on the job.

On Tuesday, Town Administrator Paul Dawson requested that Selectmen allow him to draft a policy on employees using personal cell phones while on town time.

“We understand we all have emergencies in our lives,” Dawson said. “But at some point [cell phone use] gets to a tipping point and it ought to be something we should explore.”

Some town department heads had complained about employees using personal cell phones while on the clock.

"In short, no, we don't have an answer about cell phone use," Dawson said.

Enacting a policy would have implications during the union’s collective bargaining process.

“I don’t think it would make sense to have a policy without some form of enforcement,” Dawson said.
