MARION — The Marion Fire Department received a grant for $285,695.23 from the Assistance to Fire Fighters Grant Program on Thursday, July 27, announced Massachusetts Ninth District Congressman Bill Keating.

“As we are at peak high season for our communities, having our first responders be as well-equipped as possible is of the utmost importance,” said Keating. “Day in and day out these men and women risk their lives for us. I am glad that we can provide them with the tools they need to do that as safely as possible.”

According to Marion Fire Chief Brian Jackvony, the grant will be used to purchase a new brush truck for the department.

“Our current brush truck has been converted from former military use to fight wildland fires. Statistics show that converted vehicles have inherent safety risks. We take the safety of our firefighters very seriously,” said Jackvony. “This new truck will allow us to safely respond wildland fires and other off-road emergencies in our community. We would like to thank our congressional delegation for their continued support with the AFG Grant process.”

The Wareham Fire Department was also awarded with a $389,942.72 vehicle acquisition grant as well as a $226,227.27 operations and safety grant. The Middleboro Fire Department got a $428,014.54 vehicle acquisition grant.
