Marion Fireworks Committee takes fundraising initiative

Jan 15, 2019

MARION — Though the days of grill marks and fireworks are months away, the Marion Fireworks Committee has been fighting to raise money for the biennial display of lights.

Fireworks Committee member Jill Pitman said Tuesday that the committee, made up of five volunteers, has set the date for the display for July 5, with a rain date of July 6.

“Its nice to have the fireworks as a culmination of the Fourth of July, and to be able to offer that to our residents,” she said.

This year’s event will feature food trucks and musical entertainment from the Sippican Band.

Due to the expensive nature of the event, Pitman said that the committee decided that fireworks will go off every two years.

The town does not spend any money to fund the fireworks display, so the committee looks to individuals, organizations and businesses to raise the $50,000 needed for the display.

Currently, the committee has raised about $11,000 to fund the display, said Pitman. To make the event happen, she said, the group needs to raise $35,000 by March 30 to purchase the fireworks.

The committee will also need to have all the money by May 1 for the event to take place.

The committee’s first fundraiser of the year will take place this Sunday, Jan. 18, at Tabor Academy. When families pay $5 a person to skate there, half of the funds will go toward funding the fireworks for summer 2019. The public skate is open from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

The committee will also be selling hot chocolate and conducting skate rentals to raise money.

A second fundraising event with be held on March 23, and will feature both a live and silent auction at the Marion Music Hall. Families will be invited for the silent auction and ice cream social, and the live auction will kick off in the evening with a cocktail party

“We want to involve everybody since its a family event,” said Pitman. “We want to encourage everybody to go and make a long weekend out of it.”

To donate to this year’s event, make checks payable to Marion Fireworks Fundraising Committee and mail to the Marion Town House at 2 Spring Street, Marion, MA 02738.
