Marion General Store parking lot maintenance halted, owners withdraw request for town aid
One month after requesting assistance from the town to repair the Marion General Store parking lot, the lot’s owners have decided to postpone plans for maintenance.
On Tuesday, Town Administrator Paul Dawson informed the Selectmen of the owners’ decision to withdraw their request for town aid to repaint the lines in the parking lot.
Despite being privately owned, the lot is commonly used by the public, said co-owner of the lot John Ludes.
At the time, Ludes said the spaces in the parking lot needed to be redrawn after having been worn down over the years.
“From a safety standpoint, it would be very beneficial for someone from the town to come in and lay it out,” Ludes said in September.
“We’ve had a few people run into each other in the lot.”
In September, the Selectmen agreed to consider Ludes’ request for financial assistance given the high volume of traffic at the parking lot.
Before the owners withdrew their request, the Selectmen had asked that Ludes and the other owners gather cost estimates from contractors.
While the reasons for postponing the maintenance are unknown, Dawson said it was bad timing for a project such as this one given the town’s already tight budget.
“This is probably one of the worst times for this request,” Dawson said.
To date, no repairs have been made on the parking lot.
While the matter has come to a standstill at the present, Dawson said he wouldn’t be surprised if the lot’s owners requested assistance again in the future.
“It has been discussed many times,” Dawson said.
Selectman John Henry agreed.
“We’ve seen this before and I’m sure we will see it again,” Henry said.
