Marion to get trash transition feedback, present future plans at meeting

Feb 18, 2020

MARION — The town will host an informational meeting and feedback session on outsourcing trash collection, its pavement management plan, progress on fixing the Wastewater Treatment Plant and more on Feb. 24.

The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. at the Marion Music Hall.

The feedback section of the meeting refers to the trash collection portion of the meeting, which will be run as a question and answer session between the audience, the Selectmen and the Town Administrator, since the board and town official have no new information to share.

The group also plans to have Department of Public Works Director David Willett present a pavement management plan, which shows how Marion’s roads should be upgraded to maximize the roads’ value.

Selectmen will also present on the status of a $4.68 million wastewater treatment upgrade required by the state, and on some of the capital projects that the Capital Improvement Planning Committee presented them on Feb. 18.

The committee recommended 26 projects totaling $2.2 million.  Paul Naiman, who presented for the committee said that it had no mandated projects, and focused mostly on critical infrastructure projects, like replacing fire hydrants and the town’s pumping stations.

A study of the town pumping stations in June 2019 recommended that Marion move electrical controls on all stations up higher, and consider replacing the Front Street, Creek Road and Silvershell, and Point Road stations entirely.

Of the projects the group recommended, about $1.8 million of the funding is for is Department of Public Works projects. However, Naiman said that’s typical.

Town Administrator Jay McGrail and Finance Director Judy Mooney will go through the list of recommended projects and look for ways to finance them.

Selectmen will also have another meeting to review Town Meeting articles before May 11.
