Marion girls step up to help troops overseas
While some kids are collecting fireflies this summer, two 10-year-old girls are going door-to-door to collect items for U.S. soldiers stationed in Afghanistan.
So far, Natalya Riveira and Caroline Milam both of Marion have raised more than $150 and gathered items for care packages intended for the 379th Engineering Company.
“A lot of people say every penny counts,” Caroline said. “If a lot of people give a little bit we can send the troops some things they might not be able to get. It feels really good to be helping other people.”
Natalya’s mother Jennifer Gendron said the girls were inspired to help after her daughter attended a care package party for the troops. Gendron’s boyfriend is currently deployed in Afghanistan.
“She made five (care packages) and loved it,” Gendron said. “After that her and Caroline found out what items soldiers needed most, made a list, and started visiting our neighbors for donations.”
