Marion to implement new trash and recycling service

Jul 20, 2019

MARION — The Town of Marion will implement a new automated curbside residential trash and recycling pick up program through Waste Management on Sept. 2.

"We are excited to announce the details of the new trash and recycling pickup program with Waste Management," Town Administrator James McGrail said. He also advised residents to be aware that new trash and recycling carts will be delivered to homes towards the end of August.

The delivery process will begin on Monday, August 26, and it will take one week to deliver carts to all residents. Green carts will be used for household trash, and blue carts will be used for single stream recycling. Trash will be collected every week, and recycling will be collected every other week. Pick-up days will not change from residents’ current collection schedule. Single-stream recycling will begin the week of Sept. 3 and will continue on alternating weeks after that.

A comprehensive collection guide will be mailed to residents prior to the delivery of new carts. The guide will include an annual collection calendar.

One non-recyclable item can ruin an entire batch of acceptable items, preventing the batch from being recycled at all. Food waste, plastic bags, foam cups and containers, and needles are listed as unacceptable items, and should not be placed in recycling bins.

To ensure best service, carts should be at the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day. Cars should be parked at least five feet away from the carts to provide space for the collection vehicle, and all materials must be placed in the carts to be collected.

Residents who have not received their carts by  Aug. 31, or have additional questions can call Waste Management at 1-800-972-4545. The town will also host a public meeting at 6 p.m. on Aug. 14 at the Marion Town Music Hall to answer questions about the new program.
