Marion, Mattapoisett prepare shelter, boaters remove vessels as Henri nears

Aug 20, 2021

Marion and Mattapoisett each have plans in place to open local shelters if needed when Tropical Storm Henri makes landfall.

Marion Town officials met on Friday, and put plans in place should residents need to evacuate or shelter in place. If deemed necessary by town officials as the storm approaches, residents will receive a reverse 911 call with instructions or other urgent information.

Based on their monitoring of the storm, the Mattapoisett officials do not plan to open the town’s emergency shelter, but have plans for if the shelter is needed. If needed, rides can be provided to the shelter by the Mattapoisett Police Department. Masks will be required in the emergency shelter.

While Mattapoisett urged residents to remove vessels like kayaks paddle boards and dinghies from in and near the water and ensure boats are secure, Marion is mandating that permit-holding residents remove their vessels from Island Wharf and Old Landing docks, kayak racks and dinghy racks before noon on Saturday.

Marion officials will meet again Saturday and will provide additional updates to residents by end of day Saturday. For updates, residents are urged to monitor the town website and Facebook, and subscribe to town E-Alerts.

Mattapoisett urged that residents and beachgoers stay out of the water and off the roadways during the storm to ensure emergency personnel can rescue those in need of help. It is also recommended that people avoid congregating at Town Wharf and Shipyard Park as boats are being hauled in preparation of the storm.

Homebound residents or senior citizens in Marion can call the Council on Aging at 508-748-3570 with questions or concerns. If you reach the voicemail, leave a name and number and you will receive a call back.
