Marion resident's career has gone to the dogs
Lisa Weiner has modeled and worked for Weight Watchers, but it was her rescue pup, Lilly, who inspired her to start a dog walking company – Leave It to Lisa!
“I don’t know who rescued who,” Weiner said of her lasahpoo Lilly. “She’s really been my saving grace. [The business] was the best decision I could have made.”
Although Weiner grew up around shelties, she didn’t have her own dog until adopting Lilly five years ago after she’d moved to Marion from upstate New York. Recently divorced at the time, she was looking for something new and dog walking proved to be a perfect fit for Weiner.
“I love it everyday. Even if I’m having a bad day, I can go to a client’s house, and they get so excited to see me,” she said. “Where else do you go that someone is getting so excited to see you on a daily basis?”
Weiner walks some dogs five days a week, others less, and she spends about 45 minutes with each dog. On walks, Weiner takes pictures of every pet to send to her human clients and leaves a handwritten note reporting on the day and what kind of business the pet did on the walk. After refreshing an animal’s water, giving it a treat, plus “belly rubs and tushy rubs,” she heads off to the next home where there is always another wagging tail ready for a walk.
And there is always a walk. A year-round job, there are few weather conditions that keep the energetic Weiner from taking her four-legged customers out for their daily trot.
“I feel like I’m the post office: Rain, sleet, sunshine, we go out,” she said, explaining that she has gear for every forecast.
The only times when walks are shorter is in extreme cold or extreme heat.
“I would never do anything to put the animal in harm’s way,” Weiner said.
She has built up a reputation among her clients, who are located in the tri-town, Fairhaven and Wareham, and they trust her for more than daily walk. Weiner also does sleepovers when a pet owner is out of town, looking over the house as well. She washes sheets and towels before she leaves, keeps an eye on potentially leaky pipes and checks the mail, but Weiner has one non-negotiable: “Lilly and I are a package deal. She’s my best friend.”
With Lilly as her sidekick, Weiner is passionate about her business and said there’s really only one secret to her success.
“Ultimately, it’s all about the love. I treat every animal like they’re my own – one hundred and ten percent of my attention and love.”
