Marion sailboat racing program to start in July

Jun 25, 2019

MARION — The Town of Marion Recreation Department has launched a community sailboat racing program for summer 2019.

Events will be held on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from July 13 to August 31.

Participants will compete in timed races in the outer Sippican Harbor using small “Bullseye” sailboats. Skipper check-in will be at Island Wharf, and pre-registration is required at https://www.marionma.gov/recreation-department/pages/sailing.

There will be on-the-water coaching and a question and answer debrief with hotdogs and burgers after races. Participants may bring their own Bullseye boat if they have one.

The Marion Recreation Department is also looking to hire a sailing instructor. Strong sailing skills and experience are required. First Aid, CPR, and Small Craft Safety certifications are also required and training is available. US Sailing Association Instructor or Coach Certification, as well as experience teaching, coaching, or mentoring children is preferred.

Instructors are responsible for working on small projects and lesson plans to teach the fundamentals of sailing, while being fun, educational, and age-appropriate. Instructors must ensure that boats are in safe, working condition and report any issues to the program director.
