Marion seeks new Council on Aging director

The Council on Aging is looking for a new director.

Heather Sylvia, who was Marion's Council on Aging director for just short of two years, announced her resignation, Town Administrator Paul Dawson said. Sylvia left to take the same position in Acushnet.

“I’ve been involved in government for quite a while now and never had a more enjoyable time working with someone than I did with Heather,” Selectman Chair Jody Dickerson said. “Aushnet’s gain is Marion’s loss.”

Sylvia previously served as Acushnet's Council on Aging director for six years; she has also served as a COA director in New Bedford and Dartmouth.

Activities Director Karen Gregory will take over in the interim, but the selectmen are eager to start the search for a permanent replacement and ease the load.

“Karen will do a great job,” Dawson said. “Her schedule is such that she works 30 hours, four days a week, but she has agreed to work five days. I’ve agreed to work with her to help begin planning how we can ease the burden of transportation.”

Dawson said that one of the most pressing issues at the Council on Aging is dealing with transportation.

“The scheduling of the vans really has been so successful that it is taking a tremendous amount of the director’s time,” he said. “We need to look at ways to deal with that piece of it that would allow the new director to concentrate on the work she’s doing there.”

In the meantime, town officials will advertise for the position to get it filled as soon as possible.
