Marion student to perform in Boston's 'Urban Nutcracker'

Dec 10, 2014

Nolan Gibbons is no slouch.

He sings, he dances, he acts and he does his fair share of homework.

Now, the nine-year-old Sippican School student will be on the stage in his first professional dance show.

Nolan is part of Boston’s Urban Nutcracker, a modern twist on the classic Christmas ballet that includes hip-hop, tap and flamenco dance.

“I got inspired to do Urban Nutcracker because my cousin was in it last year, and I really wanted to do it,” said Nolan.

His mom, Sheila Gibbons, marked the tryout date on the calendar and took him to audition this fall.

Nolan has participated in dance and singing classes at Adagio Arts and Wellness for several years.

He is also a member of the singing group Showstoppers, plays saxophone for the Sippican School band, takes piano lessons and performs in every school talent show.

“I started dancing when I was really young,” said Nolan. “My first performance was when I was seven.”

Nolan’s experience paid off, and he was cast in two dance numbers.

Gibbons said her son always had an ear for music, and it’s something that runs in her husband Warren’s family.

“He was not a year old and he would be singing the harmony in the back seat,” she said. “He was born singing.”

With the Urban Nutcracker, Nolan has his first opportunity to dance with renowned performers.

Produced by the Tony Williams Dance Center, the show features Russell Ferguson, winner of the 2009 “So You Think You Can Dance” TV show, Cjaiilon “Snap” Andrade, a finalist in “America’s Got Talent”, Tony Award winner Yo-el Cassell and other well-known performers from many genres.

Both Nolan and his mom say the professional performers have been great to work with and the show has been a positive  introduction to different music and cultures.

“It’s a really unique event. It’s so great they include all these kids to be around such high quality dancers. I feel really lucky that he’s in it,” said Gibbons.

The experience has also taught Nolan that not everything on the stage is exciting. He’s learning to be patient during long stretches between his dance numbers. While waiting, he reads, does homework and plays with the other kids in the cast until they’re call up again.

While Nolan has one short standout section in this year’s production (it’s top secret,) next year he hopes to get a bigger part.

“It’s just fun to be on stage,” he said. “It just gives you a really good feeling. Some people have a lot of stage fright. I think I’m the exact opposite. I want to be on stage at all times.”

Nolan will perform in Urban Nutcracker on Friday, Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 21 at 1 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 27 at 3 p.m.
