Marion students prepare for backyard birdwatch

Feb 14, 2019

The Marion Natural History Museum after school group spent the afternoon on Feb. 13 getting ready for the Great Backyard Bird Count.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is a national bird identification event that will last from Feb. 15 to Feb.18. Birdwatchers are asked to observe birds and note down which species they see at birdcount.org. The data from the weekend event helps scientists to learn about bird populations, and how to protect them.

Students at the Marion Natural History Museum went over some techniques for identifying common local birds and learning how to enter our data through the Cornell Laboratory website. The students also made a homemade bird feeder and left with a laminated field guide.
