Marion will light up for Fourth of July
Fireworks will once again fill the sky above Silvershell Beach now that the committee raising funds for the event reached its goal.
Marion Fireworks Committee Co-Chair Donna Hemphill said $44,500 has been raised to return the fireworks display, scheduled for Saturday, July 6, after an absence last year.
“We received donations from Boston, California. People are pretty excited to have them come back to town,” Hemphill said. “We want to give a big thank you to the residents and everyone else that helped the committee.”
Eventually, the committee hopes to raise $50,000 to pay for a sound system, police detail, and sanitation facilities. Extra money raised will be put into an account to pay for next year’s fireworks, she said.
Hemphill thanked the business community for their support. Donation boxes were placed throughout town.
One of the biggest, and entertaining, fundraising events was held in April, Hemphill said. Supporters attended a large beach-themed party in the Marion Music Hall. In one night, the committee raised more than $7,000.
Donations are still being accepted. Make checks payable to Marion Fireworks Committee and mail to the Town House, 2 Spring St., Marion, MA, 02738.
“We had a very hardworking, dedicated group of people raising funds this year,” Hemphill said.
