Mark Sylvia and Joe Pires face off for state legislature

Oct 23, 2024

Voters in the 10th Bristol district will elect a new state representative for the first time in more than 30 years after Rep. Bill Straus, a Democrat, announced earlier this year he would not seek re-election.

Vying for the seat held by Straus for 16 terms are Mark Sylvia, a Democrat and Fairhaven Town Meeting moderator, and Joe Pires, a Republican and member of the Old Rochester Regional School Committee.

The 10th Bristol district consists of Marion, Mattapoisett, Rochester, Fairhaven and parts of Acushnet and New Bedford.
