Mattapoiset to begin replacing streetlights

Apr 21, 2020

MATTAPOISETT  — Beginning the week of April 27 the town will replace all overhead streetlights with 370 new Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights. Arden Engineering Constructors will install the lights, which should be complete by June 2020.

The new lights will use about 65% less electricity and are oriented toward the street, reducing light waste and Mattapoisett’s greenhouse gas emissions. The new streetlights will also last four times longer and contain no mercury, which is highly toxic if not disposed of properly.

Although LED lights technically produce less light than current streetlights, it is easier to see with LED lights because the spectrum of light they produce includes more wavelengths that the eye can see. This will make colors sharper.

The new LED fixtures should maintain at least 70% of their output for 100,000 hours, or about 20 years.
