MATTAPOISETT — Veterans were honored in Mattapoisett on Nov. 11 with an event attended by Post 280 American Legion, Tri-Town Veterans Agent Chris Gerrior and the Mattapoisett Boy Scouts.

Speeches were given at the event which included stops at Shipyard Park and the Mattapoisett Free Public Library where memorials are placed for WWI veterans and for former Mattapoisett resident Florence Eastman, the only woman from the town to enlist in WWI.

Eastman served as Head Army Nurse at a hospital on Long Island and died after contracting Spanish Influenza during her service, according to the New Bedford Whaling Museum’s project Lighting the Way: Historic Women of SouthCoast.
