Mattapoisett COA to offer CPR, new cribbage group

MATTAPOISETT — The Council on Aging will host a new cribbage group starting in January, along with a host of other classes, trainings and social events.

The group’s pottery sessions cover hand-building, tile painting, slab-building, and glazing techniques. One session  will take place at the COA on Thursday Dec. 19 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Products will be fired and returned by the instructor Barbara Greenspan, artist and art therapist, after January. The special price for this class for December is $5. Call the COA to register.

Art historian Jill Sanford will give a lesson on Norman Rockwell’s work, inspirations and social statements on Jan. 7 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The lecture is free. Call the COA to register.

The Council on Aging will host a still life drawing classes for artists of all skill levels on Tuesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. starting Jan. 7. Bernie Kim, a professional educator and artist, will teach shading and other fundamental skills. The cost is $5 per session for adults over 60 and $10 per sessions for adults under 60.

The class requires 2B graphite sticks, charcoal pencils and a sketchbook or paper. Materials will be available to purchase before classes. Call the COA to register for the class.

The Mattaposiett COA also offers a variety of services to seniors who may need them. One such service is cleaning and referrals for seniors over 60 who do not have dental insurance or funds for dental care.

Seniors can make an appointment with Registered Dental Hygienist Holly Petruzzo at 774-766-7238 for dental care on Dec. 16.

The Council on Aging also partners with Lisa Nuno, a licensed Podologist to perform toenail care on the last Monday of each month. December’s visit will be on Dec. 30. Care is by appointment. Call the COA to schedule a session.

The Senior Center offers a widowed persons and significant others support group on the first Thursday of each month. The group will meet on Jan. 2 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The COA requests that attendees call to register.

The group will also hold an informational session on Medicare and Mass Health on Dec. 17 at 10 a.m. Attendees can schedule 20 minute individual consultations after the session. Call the COA to confirm attendance.

The senior center will hold a CPR and defibrillator training for non-emergency caretakers such as grandparents, or babysitters on Feb. 8 from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost for the class is $35, with an option $10 certification card. Call the COA to register.

Beyond training, the senior center also offers leisure activities for seniors. It will have movie and pizza event on Dec. 17 at noon to watch “The Farewell,”  A story of three generations of a family, love and culture. The movie is free and pizza will be served at $1 per slice. The group also offers a variety of activities on a drop in basis. On Mondays at 10 a.m., it hosts a knitting group to knit, crochet, socialize and work our project issues.

Later, at 1 p.m. on Mondays the Senior Center hosts Scrabble. A bingo group and mah jongg group both meet Wednesdays at 1 p.m.

A bridge group meets Thursdays at 1 p.m., and the new cribbage group will meet Thursdays at 3 p.m.
