Mattapoisett discusses possibilities for ‘highest ever’ free cash

Oct 12, 2021

MATTAPOISETT — Though the document has yet to be finalized, Mattapoisett’s Special Town Meeting warrant is coming together.

Most of the items on the warrant, discussed at an Oct. 12 Select Board meeting, are concerned with how to distribute approximately $2 million in free cash that the town has left in its account after last year.

“This is probably the highest amount the town has ever had,” said Town Administrator Mike Lorenco who explained that the surplus was as a result of CARES Act funding and underestimates on revenues.

The majority of that money has been divided among several Town Meeting articles that will be voted on in November including three stabilization funds, supplemental budget funding, capital improvement projects, a grant match fund, and a new voting machine for the town.

The Select Board also discussed using some of the leftover funds to pay down town debts and get ahead on planned projects. However, concrete plans could not be made until more precise budget numbers could be determined.
