Mattapoisett Fire Department restores roadside memorial
MATTAPOISETT — On Friday, June 23 the Mattapoisett Fire Department responded to a rollover vehicle crash on Route 195 East, according to a Facebook post by the department.
During the crash a roadside memorial was damaged.
The memorial honored Ines Silva who died in 2018.
“Our duty crew took it upon themselves to bring the cross back to the fire station, make the necessary repairs to get the cross back together, repair the lettering and clean it up,” read the post. “They also went through the woods on site to find as many of the memorial pieces as possible, like a teddy bear and other religious items.”
According to the post, the cross was returned along with “as many items” as could be found by fire fighters.
“My family and I are so blessed and thankful,” wrote Ines Silva’s niece, Araceli Silva in a comment on the fire department’s post. “We usually visit every year. All my family is in Illinois and this morning I spoke to them. They are so thankful. We appreciate it. The teddy bear means a lot, it’s been there since 2018 and thank you for keeping it there.”
