Mattapoisett to fly flag for organ donation

Apr 7, 2021

MATTAPOISETT — A ceremony will be held in front of Town Hall Wednesday evening to honor the life of Sam Ellis and bring awareness to organ donation.

Ellis, a former Mattapoisett resident who passed last summer at age 20, was an organ donor who hoped his legacy would “never die,” according to his obituary — and his organs would go on to save the lives of several people. The ceremony was requested on his behalf by his family and approved Tuesday night by The Board of Selectmen.

“With every tragedy comes some hope,” Vice-Chairman Jordan Collyer said.

The Selectmen will raise the ceremonial Donate Life flag in front of Town Hall on April 7 at 7 p.m. and read a proclamation provided by Donate Life America, a nonprofit advocating for organ donation as a “fundamental human responsibility.” The flag will be flown for no less than seven days.
