MATTAPOISETT — The Mattapoisett Land Trust has received $76,250 in state grant money to help fund the purchase of Santos Farm.

Santos Farm is an 8 acre property at the end of Bowman Road in the eastern part of Mattapoisett. The property is categorized as Critical Natural Landscape by the MA Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program, making it a high priority for conservation by the land trust.

The farm abuts 420 acres of MLT conservation land to the north and west.

“We’re absolutely delighted to receive this grant,” Land Trust President Mike Hugenin said.

This is the second time the conservation nonprofit has received this grant. With the funds, Hugenin said the land trust will make its first big land purchase in the last 15 to 20 years.

“It’s a great program and it helps the small guys,” he said.

The money is part of the $8.7 million in grant awarded to municipalities and land trusts to support the acquisition and conservation of over 676 acres of land throughout the Commonwealth.
