Old Rochester Regional graduate Jillian Zucco, of Mattapoisett, competed in the Miss Massachusetts pageant over the holiday weekend and placed as the first runner up to winner Alissa Musto of Rehoboth.

Zucco, who competed as Miss South Coast, took home $3,000 as the first runner up, and also won the Lifestyle and Fitness Award as well as the Miracle Maker Award. The Lifestyle and Fitness Award goes to the contestant who places highest in the Lifestyle and Fitness and Swimsuit portion of the competition.

The Miracle Maker Award goes to the person who raises the most money for the Children’s Miracle Network, which is the official Miss America platform. Zucco raised about $5,000 this year for the organization and about $20,000 over the past few years.

“This is something that is very near and dear to my heart because I just got my nursing degree, and I was treated at Boston General when I was three years and old and very ill,” she said.

Zucco has one year left of eligibility to compete in the Miss America pageant and said it is likely she’ll be back competing for Miss Massachusetts again next year.

“I have not given up my dream of being Miss America,” she said.

In the meantime, Zucco plans to take her nursing boards and pursue her doctor of nursing degree.
