Mattapoisett Museum will temporarily close to construct an accessible entrance
MATTAPOISETT — The Mattapoisett Museum will soon be under construction to provide a fully accessible entrance to visitors using wheelchairs, other mobility devices and strollers, as well as visitors who have difficulty climbing stairs.
After the museum determined a need for an accessible entrance, it spent two years gathering funding, working with a local architect and engineering firm on the design and planning construction. The entrance will lead visitors into a new foyer, which will have direct access to the Sanctuary and Carriage House.
The current entrance will continue to be used for larger events, and the current handicap-accessible entrance will also remain available.
In order to protect the Sanctuary and Carriage House from debris, the museum will temporarily close for 2026 following Labor Day weekend. Two scheduled concerts, Grace Morrison on Sept. 12 and Hot Club Cheese Roll on Oct. 24, will take place as advertised.
This means that the September Open Mic event is cancelled, and the museum will provide an update on the October Open Mic as construction progresses.
The museum encourages residents to view the current exhibit, “When Swordfish Fly,” on Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 21-22, Aug. 28-29 or Sept. 3-4. The museum also invites members and others interested to join the Sept. 6 annual meeting at 6 p.m. at 5 Church St.
