MATTAPOISETT — Mattapoisett is offering rain barrels through the Great American Rain Barrel program.

The rain barrels are available for purchase at a discounted price of $99. 

A rain barrel is used to collect and store rain water runoff, typically from rooftops via pipes. Rain barrels are said to reduce water bills by up to 40 percent, provide an alternate water source during droughts and slow pollution from runoff.

The barrels are made in Massachusetts, have a screen filter to keep out mosquitoes, and are nearly a quarter inch thick.

They are available in forest green, earth brown, Nantucket grey or unpainted.

Pick-up is available from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9 at the Mattapoisett Transfer Station, 60 Tinkham Hill Road.

Deadline to order is midnight March 29.
