Mattapoisett road and sidewalk reconstruction projects begin

Aug 14, 2018

Work began Monday and Tuesday on two separate road and sidewalk projects in two highly trafficked areas in town.

The town began construction Aug. 13, on the North Street sidewalk from the intersection from North and Church streets to Hammond Street. The work is expected to take two to three weeks to complete, according to the town highway department.

The construction will consist of the removal of the existing blacktop sidewalk, which will be replaced with a concrete sidewalk and grass strip between the sidewalk and the street. According to town officials, this will complete work necessary to bring the sidewalk from Route 6 to Water Street into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

During construction there will be no parking along the road. Residents are required to remove on-street parked vehicles by 7 a.m. At the end of each work day, travel and parking will be open until 7  a.m. the next working day. There may be traffic delays during the construction, officials warned.

Meanwhile, the final leg of the reconstruction of lower Pearl Street began Tuesday, Aug. 14,  The work there includes excavation for drainage, removal and replacement of curbing and sidewalks, and repaving of the street.

The Pearl Street reconstruction project is expected to take about five weeks. Work crews will be active beginning at 7 a.m. Monday through Friday until the project is completed. No work will take place on weekends. Travel will be restricted during working hours, town officials said.

During hours of construction, parking is prohibited along the sidewalk area, and there will be limited parking during off construction hours. There may be traffic delays on North Street during the construction, they said.
