Mattapoisett Select Board enacts no-parking zone on Ned’s Point Road

MATTAPOISETT — At an Aug. 3 meeting, the Mattapoisett Select Board voted to enact a no-parking zone along the western side of Ned’s Point Road from its intersection with Marion Road all the way to Ned’s Point.

“I like the idea of no parking on that right hand side,” said Select Board Member Jodi Bauer.

The vote followed a short briefing from Town Administrator Mike Lorenco who visited the road with a safety inspector to measure the width of the roadway and to investigate complaints of stakes placed along it by residents to deter parking on their lawns.

The Board had previously discussed the issue at an Aug. 3 meeting with all three members of the Board then voicing their support for parking restrictions along the road in response to bottlenecks to the flow of traffic.

However, a decision was previously deferred on the issue until a proper inspection of the road could be made.

Lorenco said that the road had been found to be just over 19 feet wide at its widest point, which the Board felt was too narrow to allow for parking on both sides of the road.

He also reported that many residents of Ned’s Point Road had removed the stakes in their yards or replaced them with taller ones which presented a lesser tripping hazard.

“Which is good; it means people are listening and they’re trying to make changes to what was out there,” he said.

The Board also discussed putting up a sign to remind pedestrians to walk against traffic flow and cyclists to ride with it, but no decision was made during the meeting.
