MATTAPOISETT — Selectman John DeCosta told his colleagues on Tuesday that he has been diagnosed with cancer.

DeCosta took a moment at the beginning of an April 13 Selectmen’s meeting to inform residents of his diagnosis.

“At this time, I am fully capable of carrying out my duties as a member of the Board of Selectmen,” he said, adding that he would continue to serve unless he is advised otherwise.

“Obviously it’s very disturbing and very concerning for all of us,” Board Chair Paul Silva said. “We’ll surely pray for you.”

Selectman Jordan Collyer agreed, saying DeCosta was in his and his family’s thoughts and prayers.

“Anything you need, we’re here for you,” Collyer said.

DeCosta did not mention the severity or type of cancer with which he has been diagnosed.
